How HeyMarco works: from upload to sharing

Marco reads a chat you export and writes a report about it, with the real messages as receipts. This is the whole tour, step by step, so you know what each button does before you press it.

  1. 1

Export the chat, with photos if you like

Export it from WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Messenger, LINE or KakaoTalk (the export guides show how). A WhatsApp export with media brings the photos: Marco looks at up to 30 of them, and up to 500 are kept for the chat’s photo gallery.

  2. 2

    Tell Marco about the chat

Pick what kind of chat it is and upload the file. Marco shows what he read, then you name the group, merge anyone who appears twice and turn nicknames into first names.

  3. 3

    Add profile photos

Next to each name, tap the picture to give that person a profile photo: one from the chat (their own photos come first) or one from your phone. Crop it and it shows wherever the report names them.

  4. 4

Choose the language and the tone

Marco writes in the language you pick, whatever language the chat is in. Then choose how hard he goes: “Roast us” for the group, “Keep it kind” for someone you love, or “No mercy” for friends who can take it.

  5. 5

See the numbers, then the free preview

The chat’s numbers appear right away and are free. Marco then writes the report; it takes a few minutes and you can close the tab. The opening and the first sections are free to read.

  6. 6

    Read the report your way

The report is split into tabs: Story, People, Verdict, More reports and Numbers. Each part opens from its header, or open them all at once. Switch between three looks: Chat, Magazine and Case file. Every quote is checked word for word against your messages, and in WhatsApp groups Marco knows when the group was made and when each person joined.

  7. 7

    Unlock it once

Unlocking a report is a one-time payment, with no subscription. You can also split it with the group: copy the split link and everyone pays their share.

  8. 8

    Edit names and photos

Tap “Edit” on your report to change the group’s name and how each person is called, add profile photos, and put photos under any part of the report. The chat’s page and the report show “Photos from the chat”: every photo kept from the export, each one opening full size.

  9. 9

    Share it with the group

Once a report is unlocked, its group link opens the whole report for your friends, read only, with its photos, the numbers and the chat’s photo gallery. Every other unlocked report on the chat opens from the same link. You can also turn any part of the report into a story image.

  10. 10

    Let friends get their own

Friends on your link can pick anyone in the chat and get that person’s own report, unless you turn this off when you share. If that person’s report is already open on the chat, they read it for free.

  11. 11

    Ask for more reports

Under an unlocked report, ask Marco a question about the chat, or get one person’s report, the best story of every year, a year’s Wrapped, or the story of one moment such as a trip or a party. Asking for one that already exists opens it instead of charging you again.

  12. 12

Make the chat private if you want

On the chat’s page, switch “Private” on and only you and the people you let in can open its reports, photos and numbers, whatever link they have. Let people in with a passcode, or invite them by email: each invite opens on the first phone or browser it is used on. Anyone else can ask to get in, and you decide.

  13. 13

Your messages are deleted after 7 days

The messages are deleted automatically seven days after you upload or unlock. The reports stay, and so do the photos they show; the rest of the photos go with the messages. You can delete the chat, its photos and every report yourself at any time.

Ready? Export a chat and upload it. The numbers and the preview are free, and your messages are deleted after seven days.
