How to export a Telegram chat
Telegram’s phone apps have no export button. Telegram Desktop, the app for Windows, Mac and Linux, can save any chat as a file in a minute.
- 1
Get Telegram Desktop
Install it from desktop.telegram.org and log in by scanning the QR code with Telegram on your phone.
- 2
Open the chat
Click the one-to-one chat or group you want Marco to read.
- 3
Click ⋮, then “Export chat history”
The three dots are at the top right of the chat.
- 4
Leave the media out
Under “Media export settings”, untick “Photos” and the other media. Marco only needs the text, and the export is much faster.
- 5
Choose JSON
Under “Location and format”, set the format to “Machine-readable JSON”.
- 6
Click “Export”
When Telegram says “Your data was successfully exported”, click “Show my data” to open the folder.
- 7
Upload result.json
On HeyMarco, pick Telegram and upload the file called result.json from that folder.
- Already exported as HTML? Zip the whole export folder and upload the ZIP: Marco reads Telegram’s HTML export too.
- Exported your whole account from Settings, Advanced, “Export Telegram data”? Upload result.json and Marco will ask which chat to read.
Got result.json? Upload it to HeyMarco and let Marco read it. The preview is free, and your messages are deleted after seven days.
